Every day we hear about man-made environmental disasters. Huge amounts of plastic floating in our oceans. Forest fires destroying habitats. Icebergs melting. To say it's overwhelming is an understatement!

Relax. Breathe. Let's take things one step at a time and start with the small lifestyle changes we can all make, which will contribute to the big change.

Here are our top five tips for green living that anyone can start right now.

1. Switch to reusable and sustainably sourced cleaning products

We don't realize when we use kitchen sponges how many bacteria accumulate on them. Because of this, it is recommended to throw them away every two weeks. However, as you can imagine, this has an immediate impact on the environment. More than that, but they are made of synthetic fibers that are not biodegradable. Switching to reusable and antibacterial cleaning products is an excellent first step. Not only will you help the planet, but you'll also save a few pennies.

2. Invest in fabric shopping bags rather than plastic

Yes, 5p bags are great, but have you noticed how many there actually are? They tear easily, start to smell when products leak into them, and are as "reusable" as a loaf of bread.

Buying fabric shopping bags is a great way to make a small change. Just remember that they are machine washable, but they are also much stronger.

To take it a step further, look for sustainably sourced shopping bags. Natural Elements shopping bags are actually made from recycled plastic bottles and look and feel like cotton. So, in addition to being cute and strong, they help clear plastic from the landfill. Win-win!

3. Switch to glass storage jars for pantry essentials

Glass is more hygienic than plastic because its non-porous surface doesn't stain, absorb odors, or harbor germs. Switch to glass jars for food storage and wash, reuse, and refill with confidence (as well as helping to reduce the amount of plastic purchased and stored). Not only are they great for organizing and storing dry goods, but they are also perfect for storing leftovers in the fridge.

4. Eliminate cling film and find an alternative

Cling film has a huge impact on our waterways and oceans because it is difficult to recycle. Marine animals mistake it for jellyfish and end up suffocating - just as plastic bags harm animals, as well as the environment.

Finding a biodegradable / reusable alternative will help reduce this impact and will also look much prettier than cling film.

5. Start the conversation

When you're with friends and family, tell them how these small changes can really start to make a difference. The more we talk about it, the more people will become aware, which increases the chances of change...

Be part of the conversation and start making changes today. For example, check out the Natural Elements collection that you can find at Eclair and that helps you live sustainably.
